Some puppies arrive in your life looking for love, play and comfort. Ruby arrived looking to conquer and pee on the world.

If it sounds dramatic, that’s because it is.

When I asked about her temperament, I remember exactly what I was told: “She is very loving but of course she will stand up for herself“. Both parts were understatements and there was no way I could have seen what was coming. Or maybe that “of course” was a clue. Maybe.

The first time I encountered Ruby, she was in a yard, happily chewing on a Mastiff’s ear. The Mastiff knew better – I didn’t, so I was quite surprised. Then came the moment I picked her up. After the experience with Mike, I was bracing myself. However, the tiny lady was absolutely delighted to have me carry her to her kingdom.

I took her to the car, and she settled in beautifully.

I thought, what a lovely little girl. This is going to be easy.

Oh God…

Waiting in the car was Mike, four months older than Ruby. She took one look at him and immediately growled. Not a little nervous growl. Not a tentative hello. It was a no nonsense growl. A disciplinary meeting: “Fluffy boy, listen here: I don’t know who you are but I am in charge now!” Mike looked at her, probably wondering what on earth had just happened. And then he backed down. Just like that. To a puppy who probably hadn’t even figured out where her tail was. And that was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Well, beautiful might be stretching it a little.

But Ruby wasn’t finished.

Arriving at her new home, she decided that a proper introduction was needed. So in the first 24h she peed on everyone. Yes. Everyone. Including me. Straight away. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such an efficient christening.

Mike never forgave her for that.

Each morning, he still tiptoes around her like she’s a landmine, begging me to let her out immediately—immediately! Top emergency! And of course, he checks for her “signature” before continuing with his day: disaster avoided today.
